“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” (Romans 8:28 NLT)
This may be one of the most quoted scriptures in our lifetime. It is meant to encourage us. But we are only encouraged if we actually believe that God will transform “bad” into “good. Let me tell you a story about a woman named Joni Eareckson Tada. She is not a Bible character, but certainly is an example of someone who understands that God can work all things for good. And I believe her story will strengthen your confidence in God. She was born in 1949 and is currently seventy-one years old. At the age of 17, Ms. Eareckson Tada broke her neck in a diving accident and became paralyzed from the shoulders down. There is no denying the tragedy of that accident, and the effects of living life as a quadriplegic. But yet, that is not how her story ends. I suspect no one would blame her for becoming despondent and giving up on life. However, Ms. Eareckson Tada is also a Christian. So, her strong faith and trust in God has enabled her to be a painter, author of several books, disability rights activist, and founder of a thriving global ministry. Ms. Eareckson Tada, a devoted wife of more than 30 years, is also an overcomer of breast cancer. She is an example of how God uses ALL circumstances to give success to His children and bring glory to His name.
Joni Eareckson Tada may have preferred that the accident had never occurred or that God had healed her from her paralysis. However, that didn’t happen. The unforeseen results are that millions of people around the world have been influenced, inspired, healed, and transformed by her life and ministries. Look at how God was able to use this tragedy to build His kingdom. Joni did not see those results overnight. She had to remain connected to Jesus Christ and trust the revelations of the Bible as well as personal revelations from God about her life. There is no denying what God has done in and through her, and how that has magnified Him to others. What may not look like success initially in our minds, is success through God’s eyes.
God is Sovereign. Nothing takes Him by surprise! Just as He did for Ms. Eareckson Tada, He intentionally and lovingly orchestrates the events of your life for your good and His glory. Thank God that He gives beauty for Ashes (Isaiah 61:1-3)!
Prayer: Father God, thank you for loving me and giving me the assurance that You know, see, and direct everything in my life. I believe that everything that I experience is being fashioned and shaped by You to guide me to my divine destiny. Lord, strengthen my faith each day to trust your providence and embrace your love. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
